Advantages of the BTEC First Diploma in Sport

  • Prepares young people for careers in the sport’s sector and industry.
  • Provides education and training for sports related personnel who are employed in a variety of types of work such as, fitness, coaching and outdoor pursuits.

  • BTEC qualifications are recognised by employers and educational institutes.
  • Provides a good progression route to BTEC Nationals which is the Level 3 equivalent course students could then take in Year 13.

A BTEC First Extended Certificate in Sport is a work related course that is studied by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands. It will introduce you to the demands of the sports and leisure industry and provides an excellent stepping stone towards more advanced work based qualifications.

If you choose this option it will take up one option and you will be studying it for three hours per week.


Units covered

Mandatory Units (You have to Study these units)

  • Fitness Testing and Training - Looking at the fitness demands of top class athletes down to the average performer.
  • Practical Sport - One lesson per week will be practical based. You MUST be prepared to work indoors and outdoors.


Optional Units (Dependant on which units will suit the group best, there will be some element of choice)

  • Injury in Sport - Common injuries and their prevention. All students will also be entered for a first aid qualification
  • Anatomy and Physiology - How the body works during exercise. Skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular and respiratory body systems.  
  • Exercise and Fitness instruction - Looking at how to how to lead fitness activities. What knowledge you would need to become a fitness instructor.
  • Planning and Leading Sports Activities - All pupils will be entered for the Sports Leaders Level 1 Award.

There is no final exam with this qualification. All units are assessed through coursework. Students can choose any medium for presenting their work from old fashioned pen and paper to PowerPoint presentations, leaflets, newsletters, comics, videos, and blogs.


So who is it for?

  • Suitable for any pupil who has a genuine interest in pursuing a career in sport.
  • Suitable for pupils who enjoy using ICT to produce assignments and research topics.
  • Pupils will be able to gain Sports Leaders Level 1 qualification as part of the leadership strand – must be keen to work with young people and want to be involved with coaching and officiating etc.
  • There will be some practical elements but not as much as GCSE PE. Might suit more academic pupils who are not as strong practically.
  • There is no final exam – pupils must have a good work ethic and be prepared to produce coursework of a very high standard that will be submitted for external assessment. This will be in the form of essays, presentations, revision guides, leaflets etc.
