Introducing Nala

Our School Dog

St James’s is proud to welcome Nala, our school dog, as the newest member of our school family

Nala began attending school before the summer break, initially on a trial basis, to ensure the arrangement worked well for both the school community and Nala herself.

Our intention in bringing Nala into school is to provide young people with the opportunity to benefit from interacting with a well-behaved, gentle dog. Research and experience from other schools show that carefully managed contact with a dog can have many benefits for young people.

Nala has already contributed positively in a number of ways. For example, students have leadership opportunities when they volunteer to take her on a supervised walk, some pupils enjoy reading to her, and others find calm moments with her (always supervised) particularly helpful on challenging days. Nala has brought a great deal of joy to the school community, and student feedback has been very positive.

All necessary steps have been taken to ensure Nala’s presence is safe and well managed. A full risk assessment has been completed, the appropriate insurance is in place, and all interactions with students are carefully supervised. Nala is not allowed in food preparation areas, and is always accompanied by a member of staff – usually her owner, Miss Newbury.

For any students with allergies, fears, or other concerns around dogs, the school encourages parents and carers to get in touch. Reasonable adjustments can be made to ensure every child continues to feel safe and comfortable in school.

As this exciting initiative continues to grow, the we look forward to sharing more updates about Nala’s role and the difference she’s making in daily school life.
