Physical Education at St James's

Physical Education is one of the major pillars of the school curriculum. The importance that students know how to lead an active, healthy lifestyle is a vital life skill. Within PE lessons students will understand and be able to implement different methods in order to lead a healthy active lifestyle. Students will develop a number of fundamental life skills including enhancing; confidence, resilience, communication skills, leadership, teamwork, mental toughness, dealing with failure and how to succeed amongst others.

Physical Education Department Vision

Our vision is centred around ‘fun and active engagement’. We desire to equip all pupils with enjoyment, as well as a skillset for sport, knowledge of the human body, and the ability to lead a healthy active lifestyle once they leave St James’s. We have, and will continue to design a coherently planned and sequenced curriculum that is ambitious for all. By providing regular feedback, clear end points and the opportunity to assess pupils’ own understanding; we provide learners with what they need to succeed now, and in the future.

Curriculum Intent

Our curriculum is centred around ‘fun and active engagement’. Our ambitious curriculum ensures that all pupils understand ‘what makes a good sportsperson’ in many sports which includes skills, games, knowledge of the human body, possessing the correct morals and Christian Values, in order to improve physical, mental and social wellbeing.

Curriculum Implementation

Our students are offered a broad and balanced array of sports, taught by expert teachers with consistent St James’s lesson essentials, spanning a five year curriculum. Most sports are completed in blocks of around six weeks, built upon prior knowledge each year, and complemented by an extensive extracurricular timetable allowing for further competitive scenarios. All lessons contain a teaching undercurrent of disciplinary knowledge of the human body which is regularly assessed to cement knowledge in long term memory.

Curriculum Impact

Students finish their five-year curriculum experience with the ability to lead healthy, active lifestyles beyond St James’s by continuing to take part in team sports, individual sports, or fitness training. Pupils have the foundational physical education knowledge and cultural capital to continue involvement In physical activity, but also to contribute to discussion in society, and to support others around them in their knowledge and participation in sport too.

PE Learning Journey

Revision Lessons

Please take a look at our 'Revision Lessons' folder which contains all the topics that Year 7 - Year 10 will be taught in their six half terms at St James's. These lessons have been expertly drawn together by staff and will cover everything that pupils have been taught in their core lessons. These lessons will also be used when pupils have their revision lessons one month prior to their 'Assessment Week'.

Reflecting on current research, we have focussed our revision systems to three main strategies: Mind Maps, Self Quizzing & Revision Cards, details of which are included at the beginning of every lesson. We encourage pupils to use their independent time to apply these strategies to the PowerPoint information to enhance their learning.

The content also forms the foundations for the ½ termly homework pupils receive at the end of the half term - for more information on homework, please visit our 'Homework Timetable' option.

Key Stage 4

Key Stage 4 updated below

In Years 10-11 students will opt to follow either a Maximum Performers or Healthy Lifestyles pathway. The Maximum Performers pathway is designed for those students who enjoy the traditional sports from KS3 and like the element of competition (including all of our GCSE PE students). The healthy lifestyles pathway is designed to help students to understand who to remain physically active during their school years and after they leave and will include activities they may consider taking part in outside of school. This pathway has less of an emphasis on competition and more on being active.
